Acid etching is a process that uses a strong acid to cut into another substance. It is used for both industrial and artistic purposes. For example, etching can be used to prepare flooring like cement for painting or refinishing, while artists use it to create detailed pictures on metal or glass.

Acid-etched glass has a distinctive, uniformly smooth and satin-like appearance. Acid-etched glass admits light while providing softening and vision control.

Acid-Etching Glass production
Acid etched glass is produced by acid etching one side of float glass. Etched glass is created by cutting a design stencil that is made of an abrasive resistant material, such as vinyl or rubber. The resulting stencil is called a resist. The resist is then secured onto the glass to be etched. A blaster gun, powered by an air compressor, is used to bombard theglass with the abrasive. Every part of the glass that is not covered by the resist will take the frosted effect while the parts protected by the resist will remain clear, thus producing a piece of etched glass.

Etching glass - Hydrofluoric acid
Glass is etched by hydrofluoric acid, or by hydrofluoric acid gas. The gaseous acid has the property of producing a surface which resembles ground glass in its appearance; the liquid acid produces clear etching. Etching glass, therefore, consists of 2 distinct branches. First, the production of a dull image on a clear surface (when the gas is used) and second, the production of a clear image on a surface previously ground or dulled by means of the liquid acid.

Frosted glass is produced by the sandblasting or acid etching of clear sheet glass. It has the effect of rendering the glass translucent by scattering of light during transmission, thus blurring images while still transmitting light.

Applications:

• Decorative patterns may be imposed upon otherwise plain glass by using wax or other inhibitors to retain transparent areas.
• Frosted glass in light bulbs is used for evenly distributing the light from the bulb's filament across its surface area.

• To create an airtight seal in tubes.
• The frosted glass effect can also be achieved by the application of vinyl film, used as a sort of stencil on the glass surface. "Photo-resist", or photo-resistant film is also available, which can be produced to mask off the area surrounding a decorative design, or logo on the glass surface. A similar effect may also be accomplished with the use of canned frosted glass sprays.

Lacquered glass, colored and opaque in appearance, is produced by depositing and then baking a coating of lacquer to one side of the glass. Lacquer is a solution of film-forming materials, natural or synthetic, usually applied as an ornamental or protective coating.
In the case of conductive materials such as metals lacquers are preferably applied by means of electrostatic lacquering. The charging of the powder lacquer particles which is required for electrostatic lacquering can take place by direct contact of the particles with high-voltage electrodes.For the electrostatic lacquering of non-conductive surfaces such as glass a layer of a conductive organic polymer from the class of the polypyrroles, polyanilines or polythiophenes is applied to the surface and this layer is then electro statically lacquered. The electrically conductive polymer dispersions can be used alone or in combination with binders such as polyurethanes, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylates, unsaturated polyester resins or their mixtures. The binders are preferably used as aqueous dispersion or emulsion or solution. Additives such as salts of long-chain aliphatic or araliphatic sulphonic acids, lower alcohols (methanol, ethanol) can be added to the aqueous dispersions of conductive polymer and optionally binders.

Titanium-Based Metallic-Glass
Just like window glass, metallic glass has no crystalline structure and is usually made with combinations of zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel, platinum, or other metals. The resulting material, while turning out to be exceptionally strong, is also unusually brittle, which makes it impossible for engineers to use it in practice. While most other metals deform plastically, meaning that heavy loads cause them permanent deformations, metallic glass behaves like an elastic band, regaining its original shape when released but snapping when stretched past a certain point. This characteristic causes any piece of metallic glass with substantial thickness to shatter easily when sbent – You couldn’t build a bridge out of it. It breaks with no visual precursor.
