Glass Table Tops

Difference Between A Glass Table Top And A Glass Table Cover?

The difference between a glass table top and a glass table cover: A glass table top means that your table's top is actually constructed out of glass.

A glass table top cover, on the other hand, is made of glass and rests on top of the actual table. It preserves the look and value of your wooden or metal table.

Why Glass Table Tops?

  • Protect your furniture from nicks, scratches, and other possible damage.
  • Refresh older pieces with a less permanent option, as compared to stains or paint.
  • Glass is beautiful; a glass top is an excellent way to add shine to an otherwise dull item.
  • Elevate the impact of wood tables or dressers while protecting these investments from scratches, glass rings, sun damage and scuffs.
  • Order a tabletop to complete a table, nightstand or even a plant stand.
  • Renew old glass table inserts with a glass table replacement; outdoor tables are especially vulnerable to damage and weathering.

Glass tabletops are used in a number of different ways, but the most popular is to use the glass to protect the surface of a table, desk, or a coffee table. When used as a cover on a wood surface, normally a thinner glass such as 1/4" is used. The edges of the glass would normally be polished to smooth them out and avoid the possibility of injury from the sharp edges. When glass is used as a wood surface cover there is no need for tempering the glass.

Checklist for when glass sits directly on the surface of furniture:

  • Recommended glass thickness: 1/4" is the preferred thickness. 3/8" or 1/2"can be used for effect but make sure that the furniture can carry the weight.
  • Recommended edge: flat polish is the preferred edge work. However, pencil polish or beveled polish can be used to give accent or a dramatic effect.
  • Glass Strength: Annealed glass is sufficient to protect the table but glass can always be tempered for added safety, especially if there are younger kids in the house.

Checklist for when glass embedded in a table or wrapped in metal frame:

  • Recommended glass thickness: 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Recommended edge: Seamed edge or flat polished edge. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Recommended Strength: Tempered glass is recommended for added safety and strength.
Please note that we cannot provide measurement services or accept templates for this type of glass replacement.

GLASS THICKNESS

That depends on the table. If the glass piece is being used as a table cover or a protective cover then 1/4" thickness is sufficient. If the glass piece is being set upon a stand or a pedestal to form the actual table surface, however, then depending on the size you may choose to use a thicker glass.

In these cases if the glass table to be used is larger than 24" in dimension or is to support heavy objects using any range of thickness larger than 1/4" is recommended.

When it comes to choosing a thickness between 3/8", 1/2" or 1/4" it is mostly a matter of preference. Obviously thicker glass has a more substantial look and feel but the weight of the glass top becomes a major consideration after a certain size. Thicker glass can become very heavy as the size increases.

Here are our standard thicknesses:

3/16" – This is a good thickness for patio tables, small tables, inserts, and as glass protective table covers.
1/4" – This is a good thickness for glass tabletops and glass protective table covers.
3/8" – This is a good thickness for heavy, unsupported table tops where the glass is the only table top.
1/2" – This is the strongest, most attractive thickness available, ideal for heavy, unsupported table tops where the glass is the only table top.

GLASS EDGES

We offer four different types of edging for your glass table top or glass table cover. The type of edging you choose will be influenced by the use to which you put the table. Here are the basic edges:

Seamed edge – removes the sharpness for safer handling. In this application, after the glass is cut the edges are sanded to dull the sharp edges. This is to make the glass safe to handle. Choose a seamed edge if the glass is to be framed and in applications where the edges are not visible.

Flat edge – a polished "square" edge. In this application the edge of the glass have been polished to a smooth shiny finish. Choose a flat polish when the edge of the glass are visible and you prefer a minimalistic look.

Pencil edge – a polished round edge. In this application the edge of the glass have been polished to a smooth shiny rounded finish.

Beveled edge – a straight sloped edge from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch slope. In this application the edge of the glass are cut and polished in an angle with a specific bevel width. Bevel width must be specified by the customer and can be range in size from 1/4" to 1-3/4". Most common one is 1". Bevel width must be entered in the system when pricing and ordering.
